Rezone to Create Medical Office Space

City of Bellingham Planner Kathy Bell calls for the Bellingham City Council to repeal the existing zoning of the 42 acres of land between James Street and Orchard Drive, which is east of Cornwall Park. Bell and Jack Swanson, who represents Edgewater Park, LLC and Ahi Ohana, recommend that the land be used for medical offices. Swanson says the number one employer in the city is the Peace Health St. Joseph Medical Center. With the repeal of the 2006 plan for the area, Bell thinks that the site will open up more jobs to the public. She thinks that because St. Joseph Medical Center is becoming too large for its' capacity, this area off orchard drive can open up space for the hospital.

Allied Artists Collaborate on Murals

Two artists from Allied Arts are teaming up to help Parkview Elementary School create two murals.

The first is a painted tree mural made out of wood, which will be taught by Ben Mann. The second is a clay mural that includes clay leaves, bugs, flowers, and birds and the workshop will be taught by Jacquie Bresadola. The teachers will choose a group of 25 students to be the designers of the murals. The 25 students will choose the drawings that will be used for the clay leaves, bugs, flowers, and birds. During a workshop students will sculpt the clay figures and learn the fundamentals of clay. The two murals will be side by side on one wall. They are connected because the clay figures will be mounted on the painted wood the tree. For example a clay bird from the clay mural will be on the branch of the tree mural. Each student will be able to help create the two murals and have their art on display for however long the building is there.

Port of Bellingham Prepares for 2013 Bellwether Arts Market

The Bellwether Arts Market will have it's two year anniversary this August. The market will be every Sunday in August at the Tom Glenn Common park and plaza on Bellingham's waterfront. The Port of Bellingham has created the market in partnership with local non-profit organization, Allied Arts.

Allied Arts has a strong focus on helping local artists. Allied Art's mission statement is that it is "dedicated to the arts in our region by empowering local artists through organized festivals and events."

"We thought it was a good start. We are working with Allied Arts to have that again this year in 2013. We are coming up with all kinds of cool things we can add to the event," says Community Relations Coordinator Marie Duckworth, who is the Community Relations Coordinator for the Port of Bellingham.

She worked behind the scenes to help Allied Arts have the security guards, water hoses, barricades, and signage that it needed.

"It's got the vendors and not just artists. There's also a live music component to it," says  Duckworth.

Last year all the musicians were local. The coordinators of the market have thought about some non-local bands play at the market but because of the small capacity that the park holds this can't be an option. The 1.6-acre waterfront park and plaza can hold up to several hundred people. If the market were to have a more popular musicians play then the Port of Bellingham would have to spend more tax payer dollars on security, barricades, and parking space.

The market is welcoming to families and children. Allied Arts is teaming up with artists that know how to work with children. Like last year, there will be a different teaching artist every Sunday, focusing on a certain project appropriate for children.

"We want to make sure people know about it since last year was our first year," says Duckworth.

The Bellwether Arts Market will open up August 4 starting at 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and every Sunday in August. Allied Arts handles the booth spaces. If you are interested in having a booth email info@alliedarts.org
