Rezone to Create Medical Office Space

City of Bellingham Planner Kathy Bell calls for the Bellingham City Council to repeal the existing zoning of the 42 acres of land between James Street and Orchard Drive, which is east of Cornwall Park. Bell and Jack Swanson, who represents Edgewater Park, LLC and Ahi Ohana, recommend that the land be used for medical offices. Swanson says the number one employer in the city is the Peace Health St. Joseph Medical Center. With the repeal of the 2006 plan for the area, Bell thinks that the site will open up more jobs to the public. She thinks that because St. Joseph Medical Center is becoming too large for its' capacity, this area off orchard drive can open up space for the hospital.
